Dear Warrior,

Imagine this...

You feel like the room is spinning...

You're on your back, sweating, and sucking wind...

It feels like there's a 167 pound snake on top of you working its way around your limbs... tightening itself around your arms and wrists, twisting you into a pretzel.

You're being setup! Must resist...

Your shoulder begins to tighten.  You vaguely recall minutes earlier a voice saying...

"Now, remember to submit when you feel the pressure."

Pressure?!?!

What's he talking about, this freaking hurts! You're searching inside your head for a way out of this... the 'snake' slivers and tightens.

But then before you can even complete a thought, you let out a painful groan, "Arrrggghhghgh!" and kick the ground repeatedly and shake your body frantically.

Finally the hold relaxes and you start to get the feeling back in your shoulder.

"Pheww..."

Ah yes... finally your mind catches up with you...

"Wow, this stuff really hurts!"

Now it's your turn to be the snake... Sweeet!

Training Under Chief Master Taejoon Lee

As of October of this year, I will have trained under Chief Master Taejoon for 2 years.

When I took part in last years Summer Seminars alongside 50 of the best martial artists in the world, I was still very "green" to martial arts in general. (Literally, I was green belt!)

My competitive sports and martial arts experience up to this point consisted of about 6 months of Karate in 4th grade (where I competed in one Karate tournament and lost in the first round), playing football for 7 years as an offensive guard and impromptu wrestling matches I would have with my fraternity brothers at MIT.

For the most part, these experiences taught me to take advantage of my 270 pound frame and functional strength to gain the upper hand in sports and as a beginning grappler.

But during no time my life did I have the opportunity to understand the human body from a martial arts perspective.

Up until that point, I relied on my size and strength to win my battles.

Well, kicking off the 2007 Summer Seminars with Joint Manipulation became a rude awakening for this big man.

"You Need to Relax"

For 4 straight hours Master Lee taught us what seemed to be an endless array of debilitating joint locks and hold on a very pain-tolerant Jo Kyo Nicholas Day. A dojang full of Hwa Rang Do Black Sashes and a few lower rank students (including myself) did our best to keep up with the onslaught of techniques.

The most important lesson for me came during the second session of Joint Manipulation where I was partned with Jo Kyo Nim Preston Packard.

I'll never forget his first words to me, "I usually don't get an opportunity to train with someone your size". I guess I was suppose to take it as a complement...

While working on a wrist lock technique, Instructor Packard said something that had a powerful impact on how I would train and compete from that point on. As I attempted to perform a technique, he told me, "Relax. You're too tense. You're giving yourself away. You need to relax."

The Secret to True Strength in Combat

The simple words "you need to relax" struck a powerful chord with me and changed the way I trained and transformed the way I received the hundreds of other techniques we learned over the next 2 days.

As a 6-foot, 3-inch 270 pounder, it's hard to let go of your strong suits for the sake of self-betterment. Society teaches us to nurture our strengths, then get a job and make a career out of them.

As a big guy, my tendency is to control my situation by forcing the things I want to happen.

That day, I learned to observe the situation and capitalize on the openings given to you. Hwa Rang Do has taught me to work on my weaknesses, so that I may have choices - both in competition and in life.

As the world's most comprehensive martial art, Hwa Rang Do is unique in that it empowers you by providing you with limitless options.

The Art of Limitless Options

Now, I no longer have to fear the day when I will have to compete against someone who is bigger, faster or smarter. I welcome the challenge and the openings, which will be given to me as a result of facing a diversity of opponents - all shapes, sizes and ages.

The Hwa Rang Do Summer Seminars are specifically designed to expose you to the limiteless options of the art, filling your brain with more fighting knowledge than you can verbally express and discover the depth of an art which has evolved for 2,000 years.

On that first day of seminars...

Master Lee managed to inundate my brain with enough joint manipulation techniques to make a pretzel out of a cow and enough to counter a cow if one ever tries making a pretzel out of me.

Seminar techniques were taken right from Master Lee's NEW Book!

In addition to joint manipulation, he covered plenty of takedowns, ground fighting, submissions, sparring, sword fighting among other aspects of Hwa Rang Do.

Although, he was sure to inform us all that what we learned today hardly makes us qualified martial artists by any means – this was quite a change from the quack-martial artist that claim he can make you a master at disarming an assailant with a gun if you pay him $200 and spend 30 minutes "learning" from him.

To this day, I continue to train with some of the most skilled, yet humble martial artist in the world.

Here are some of the Extraordinary Hwa Rang Do® students and instructors I train with and whom will be at this years Summer Seminars:

Among them I met 3rd Dan Black Sash Instructor Scott McKnight, who has a degree in Physics from UCLA and is currently the Network Administrator for the UCLA Law School.  He's been training with Master Lee since 1985.

He's been a student of Master Lee for over 10 years.

At this seminar, you will be exposed to sparring techniques (from setups, to scoring points, to defending, and counter attacking), the art of using the knife, grappling (focusing on arm bars and shoulder locks), and the special feature of the weekend, kumdo - point setups and combos!

You may already have some interest in martial arts, much as I did when I first attended, but you may be at a loss as to which aspect of martial arts to focus on.  This seminar is perfect for you because it will open many doorways for you and give you an introduction to many different aspects of martial arts in general.

It will help you find your calling and you can choose to focus on that one specific area – here or there is up to you.

You will learn through association and osmosis what it may be like to get away from the commercialized state of the martial art industry today and move beyond taking a martial art -- I invite you to follow the Martial Way.

If you are clueless about martial arts and curious about the benefits, this seminar would be a great start for you to understand how it may enhance your life.

You will be exposed to a community unlike any you've experienced before. Learn what it is like to have not only control your own mind and body, but learn to control your "opponent's" mind and body.

Your eyes will be opened to the rigorous physical activities that your body would undergo and the challenging exercises the body will demand of your mind.

Face and Overcome Your Fears

You will perhaps be exposed to fears that have laid dormant – the fear of humiliation when it is revealed how out of shape you may be.

Or the fear of defeat as the person on top of you controls you no matter how much you struggle.

Or even the fear of discovering how vulnerable you are in not knowing how to defend yourself.

More importantly, you will learn that there is a way conquer each and every one of those fears – in time.

Fears are a god-send and serve to tell us what we should be doing.  They are a compass for purposeful living.

The seminar's goal is not to make you into a martial art master in merely two days (if you believe this can be done and expect as such, this seminar is not for you).

The goal is to add value to you and to empower you through martial art education.  Regardless of your experience and your fitness level; rest assured that you will leave with greater knowledge and value than when you started.

Here are some Details on what you can expect to learn and experience:

Chief Master Taejoon Lee visited Minneapolis, MN on July 10 & 11, 2004 as part of his World Tour and spent the weekend teaching point sparring, kick defense takedowns, and sword fighting.

For those of you who actively compete in stand-up fighting competitions, Hwa Rang Do offers a unique approach to stand-up striking and counters, unavailable anywhere else.

Day 2 - Saturday July 26th, 2008

Session IV: Effective Takedowns
(10:00 - 11:30 AM)

As stage two of Hwa Rang Do's fight plan, you want to be able to quickly end a fight with a submission, but in most cases, before this is possible, you need to know effective and practical takedown maneuvers to setup up your opponent for a bone break or submission.

This session will provide you with the practical knowledge to achieve this.

Session V: Grappling - Arm Locks
(12:30 ~ 2:00PM)

Master Lee Demonstrating Some Painful Grappling Techniques on Instructor Wright during the 2004 Korea Trip.

Session VI: Grappling - Leg Locks
(2:15 ~ 3:45 PM)

Minneapolis, MN 2004 Seminar

In this session, you will learn some of the most effective and painful submissions, which take advantage of your mobility and effectively neutralize larger opponents on the mat.

These are some of my favorites, because they require no strength to execute and takes advantage of an opponents carelessness with their legs.

Session VIII: Ki Gong and Meditation Principles
(4:00 ~ 5:30 PM)

As a special treat, Supreme Grandmaster Dr. Joo Bang Lee will be passing teaching on the power of Eastern healing, meditation and breathing techniques, derived from his extensive knowledge as a Doctor of Easter Medicine and the ancient knowledge gained through his Hwa Rang Do training under his Master, Suahm Dosa - a hermit buddhist monk.

Why So Inexpensive? In an effort to reach out to the general public and other martial artists, we want to make our seminars as affordable and accessible as possible.

Let's face it. Hwa Rang Do® training, skills and techniques are not easy and take years of dedicated study to master. But we still want as many to benefit from our traditions and skills via these seminars, while maintaining the exclusivity of our Hwa Rang Do® family.

Hwa Rang Do® is NOT for everyone and investing tuition and thousands of hours of study is daunting for many, which is why Master Lee has produced this easy to follow, practical seminar curriculum for just about anyone to benefit from, whether you are a beginner or experienced martial artist.

But we do ask that you come ready to work, sweat and to check your ego at the door!

A REAL "No Brainer"

Even after all we've shared with you, if you are still hesistant about paying out $250 for this weekend of LIVE hands-on instruction from Supreme Grandmaster and Master Lee, consider this...

Master Lee frequently gets calls from martial arts practitioners and students asking for just one hour of his time for a PRIVATE session -- many of these offers he turns down.

Normally, a private session would cost a minimum of $300.00 for just one hour of instruction.

If you paid Master Lee to spend the same amount of time with you that he's spending at this years Summer Seminars, you'd have to pay $4200 to get the same amount of training, without the opportunity to meet and train with the Founder of Hwa Rang Do and some of the best martial artists in the world.

You'll have the founder of Hwa Rang Do - Dr. Joo Bang Lee, Chief Master Taejoon Lee, and over 50 Hwa Rang Do Black Sashes at your disposal for 2 straight FULL Days!

This isn't an exaggeration.

To be blunt, its simply a NO BRAINER!
